NSW: Firebug refused bail in Liverpool Court

An 18-year-old man charged with lighting fires in Sydney's south-west has been refusedbail in Liverpool Local Court today.

Magistrate KEVIN FLACK says MARK JOSEPH GALLAGHER, of Glenfield, could not be releasedinto the community because it is against the public interest.

Legal aid lawyers representing GALLAGHER had requested bail citing concerns for hiswell-being in custody given that he has a significant intellectual disability.

The court was told GALLAGHER, who resides with his mother and brother, allegedly starteda fire in Glenfield on Wednesday.

Magistrate FLACK, who told GALLAGHER he faced a maximum 14 years jail, refused himbail saying the protection and welfare of the community is at risk given the current bushfireclimate.

GALLAGHER sat in court with his head hung throughout the proceedings before wavingto his family as he left the dock.
